In the 1970s and 1980s, one of the most
enduring Chinese Kung Fu superstars, Jackie Chan, had become a legend in his
own right, starring in countless action films both in China and abroad, throughout
his film career; Jackie Chan has appeared in more than 100 releases. The following
were the six of the most significant films of Jackie Chan's film career.
1. ‘Project
A’
Project A was a 1983 Hong Kong martial arts
action comedy film written and directed by Jackie Chan, who also starred in the
film. It was perhaps one of the films to crystallize the fact that Chan’s style
was so closely inspired by comedy routines by the likes of Harold Lloyd and
Buster Keaton. Project A was huge success at the Hong Kong box office, earning
HKD$19,323,824 in Hong Kong.It was also very well received abroad, and
particularly throughout East Asia.
2. ‘Rush
Hour ‘
The film Rush Hour was Brett
Ratner-directed action comedy, which pairs Jackie Chan with comedian Chris
Tucker. The film's success spawned two sequels, Rush Hour 2 and Rush Hour 3,
and while it may not be one of Chan’s best films overall, the franchise is his
biggest Hollywood success and among his best stateside projects. Tucker earned
$25 million for his role in the third film and Chan received the film's
distribution rights in Asia.
3. ‘Armour
of God II’
Armour of God II was a 1991 Hong Kong
action-comedy film written and directed by Jackie Chan, who also starred in the
lead role. This film was more akin to the Indiana Jones film series in that it
features Chan's character Jackie battling against a former Nazi to retrieve
gold from an abandoned base deep in the Sahara Desert.
4. ‘Police
Story’
To the most honest fans of Jackie Chan film,
Police Story may be his signature franchise, and it all starts with this
initial adventure. Chan himself considers Police Story to be among his very
best films, Police Story was a huge success in East Asia. It won the Best Film
award at the 1986 Hong Kong Film Awards. According to Chan's autobiography he
considers Police Story his best action film. The film grossed HK $26,626,760 at
the Hong Kong box office at that time.
5. ‘Who
Am I?’
Who Am I? was a 1998 Hong Kong action
comedy film directed by Benny Chan and Jackie Chan, who also starred in the
lead role. The film features several landmarks such as Sun City in South
Africa, Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam and the Beurstraverse. In the movie, Jackie
Chan plays a secret agent is trained to perform special tasks. In one
implementation task of finding new energy sources being stolen, he has amnesia
and is a Native American tribe rescued. He does not remember who he is. They
had called him Whoami. He left the tribe and return to the city to find his
memories. He was the group who caused the accident helicopter chase. A female
reporter helped him in the process of accessing these criminal gangs heart.
6. ‘Rumble
in the Bronx’
The ‘Rumble in the Bronx’ was the film that
finally began to establish an appreciation for Chan’s work in the U.S., thanks
to its domestic release in 1996. As a Hong Kong cop who travels to the titular
New York borough, Chan engages in one breath-taking fight scene after another,
all while blending his signature comedic skill. As far as showcases for the star’s
filmography, Rumble in the Bronx is certainly a solid one, as it directly
influenced Hollywood to finally realize Chan’s limitless appeal.
